Like many others, for many years we’ve hidden ourselves away at Halloween and waited for it to pass. This year our eldest son asked more questions than usual about our lack of participation, and it got me to thinking what we might do as an alternative that could hold as much excitement, or even more! When we came up with the idea of a Light Disco on our driveway, we had not heard of Light the Night, but only days after we were thinking about this a colleague of mine listened to my plans and shared how he had recently heard of Light the Night and was inspired, and had made a note to mention it to me.
So we had sooooo many lights, lively music, served hot dogs, cookies, became a helpful loo stop for little ones! and heard such warm responses from the 200+ people who stopped by. 120 children given wristbands simply sharing how Jesus is the Light of the world.
Some asked what we were doing, and were so appreciative of a response which says that though we don’t personally celebrate Halloween, we wanted to be part of the community as they were out and about, and share our light disco as we celebrate Jesus being the light in the darkness.
Many were astonished at the simple gesture of free food
Others, when realising I’m a minister at the Baptist church, wanting to know if we were taking donations (we were not!)
One saying ‘This is the best ever. This is our first stop, you’ve set the bar really high for the rest of our walk!’
And my favourite: “If this is what you do for something you don’t celebrate, what will you put on for Christmas?!?
